Doris Makes Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Irish squad for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".
After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
