Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
